The Kankakee County Humane Foundation (KCHF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter that receives no taxpayer or government funding. Every dollar that keeps our doors open comes from the kindness of people and businesses like you — through donations, fundraisers, and Corporate Sponsorships.

Each year, we provide shelter, care, and second chances to hundreds of dogs and cats right here in our community. Many arrive neglected, abandoned, sick, or surrendered through no fault of their own. Like many nonprofits, 2025 has brought rising costs for veterinary care, food, cleaning supplies, and staffing. On top of that, we’ve faced an influx of owner surrenders, intakes from high-kill shelters, and medical emergencies, .

It costs an average of $1,800 per animal to provide proper care, medical attention, and a safe space until adoption. Meanwhile, our shelter — built decades ago — continues to require crucial repairs to stay safe and functional for both animals and staff.
